William Afton, or "The Animatronic", also known as "Springtrap" is one of 40 Killers currently featured in Dead by Daylight.

He was introduced as the Killer of CHAPTER 36: Five Nights at Freddy's, a Chapter DLC released on 17 June 2025.

He originates from the 2014 Horror Video Game Five Nights at Freddy's, and made his debut as "Springtrap", in Five Nights at Freddy's 3.

Overview[]

A monstrosity of flesh and metal, Springtrap’s bloodstained past is littered with the innocent dead. His horrifying innovations are a reminder that beneath the cruelty lies a brilliant inventor, whose creations brought laughter and screams to the same unfortunate audience.

The Animatronic always comes back.

His personal Perks, Help Wanted, Phantom Fear, and Haywire, help him compromise generators, make Survivors scream, and regress exit gate switches.

Difficulty Rating: Hard
(These Killers use mechanics that are specific to them and require more practice to be effective)

Lore[]

Deep within the abandoned Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, William Afton ran from the ghosts of his victims. He frantically put on his beloved Spring Bonnie costume, the disguise he wore while commiting his heinous crimes, to hide from the pursuing spirits.

But fate had different plans for Afton. Something activated the springlocks within the Spring Bonnie costume. Metal clamped against metal, piercing the murderer and trapping him in his costume. As he screamed, the checkerboard floor rose up to meet him, and everything went black.

Thus was Springtrap born: from the death of a murderer.

He awoke to a familiar sound, his body a pillar of agony. The ghosts that had tormented him were gone. The walls surrounding him were decomposing, the floor beneath him falling away in moldy patches. How much time had transpired since the springlocks tore through his body and fixed him within his costume? The urge to kill lingered within him still, the thirst long left unquenched.

The sound filled his ears again. Children's laughter. Were children playing in the kitchen? Springtrap rose to his feet, adjusting to his new body, and marched towards the sounds.

He picked up speed as he moved. Walking turned to running. He rushed into the kitchen and found...

Nothing.

No children, no games, no laughter. Just a swirling mass of black fog enveloping the far wall.

Springtrap examined the fog. Curiosity tightened his grip on him. As he stared into the darkness, his distended eyes could see shapes emerge within the fog.

Who were they? It didn't matter. They were his victims now. Somehow, he knew the hunt could go on forever.

All he had to do was step into the fog.

Trivia[]

  • William uses fake names to not expose himself in public. In the book "The Silver Eyes", William uses the alias "Dave Miller", and in the movie, he uses the alias "Steve Raglan".
  • Scott Cawthon, the creator of the Five Nights at Freddy's series, was the one who recommended the idea of the Yellow Rabbit being a Legendary Skin for The Animatronic.
  • The Animatronic's Power takes its name, Fazbear's Fright, directly from the horror attraction that serves as the setting of Five Nights at Freddy's 3.
  • The Fire Axe of his Power may be a reference to an extremely famous music video based on Five Nights at Freddy's 3, created by The Living Tombstone. The music video for "Die in a Fire" depicts William Afton furiously dismantling the four main animatronics of Five Nights at Freddy's with a fire hatchet.
    • This would inspire fans to create concepts for both William and Springtrap wielding a fire hatchet or axe. Eventually, these concepts would extend to Dead by Daylight, culminating in the DBD Community Concept Team's animation of a full Five Nights at Freddy's Chapter for the game. This equally may have played a role in the inspiration for The Animatronic to wield the same fire axe as in that Concept, but as part of his Power instead of his Basic Attack.
  • The Animatronic features references from all throughout the franchise, having his default skin his original appearence in Scott Cawthon's Five Nights at Freddy's 3, a skin of his likeness from Blumhouse's Five Nights at Freddy's movie, two skins from Illumix's Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery and a skin from Steel Wool Studio's Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted.

Lore[]

  • Springtrap was taken by The Entity some time before the events of Five Nights at Freddy's 3, transporting him into the Fog after he had been locked up for several years inside of the safe room. Due to this, CHAPTER 36: Five Nights at Freddy's diverges from the regular Five Nights at Freddy's timeline, making it non-canon to the mainline story.
  • The Yellow Rabbit was taken by The Entity in the climax of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie (2023), just as he had been dragged away by Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy after succumbing to a springlock failure.
  • Glitchtrap within the Fog is a copy made by the Entity from the digital being in The Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience in Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted and given a physical form by The Entity.

Mori[]

  • Springtrap's Mori might have taken inspiration from the torture device in "Five Nights at Freddy's" (2023) film.
  • Glitchtrap's Mori animation features a slight difference in animation, where instead of jumpscaring the survivor, he shushes them, referrencing one of the endings in Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted.

Voice Actors[]

  • The Animatronic's Default skin, Toxic skin and Clown skin are voiced by PJ Heywood, the original actor who voiced William Afton in Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location, Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator and Ultimate Custom Night, as well as Springtrap in Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery. PJ voices both versions of the character in Ultimate Custom Night, those being called “Afton” and “Springtrap” respectively.
  • When playing as The Yellow Rabbit (The Animatronic's Legendary Skin), he has unique voice lines provided by Matthew Lillard, the actor who portrayed William Afton/Steve Raglan/The Yellow Rabbit in Blumhouse's "Five Nights at Freddy's" (2023) film.
  • When playing as the “Glitchtrap” legendary skin, he has modified Laugh and "shhhh" sounds provided by Sébastien Croteau, who previously voiced Nemesis T-Type and The Xenomorph

Voice Lines[]

  • The Yellow Rabbit has unique dialogues about Nicolas Cage when he captures him and puts him onto a Hook or throws him into the Torture Device during the Mori
