The Underground Complex or "Laboratory" is the only Map in the Hawkins National Laboratory Realm
.
The Map was inaccessible to Players for almost two years when CHAPTER 13: Stranger Things was retracted on 17 November 2021.
The Map returned with Patch 7.3.3 on Stranger Things Day 2023 (6 November 2023).
Lore
Located below the Hawkins National Laboratory, this underground complex released dozens of inter-dimensional creatures in November of 1983, before the rift was sealed.
The site kept some vestiges of its past as the mental health institute, including a mouldy isolation tank used by patients suffering from acute anxiety that was later modernised for mind control experimentation on promising test subjects.
Now the walls of the abandoned facility are sprayed with bullets and blood, evidence of a battle against inter-dimensional creatures.

The Rift Lab is the main Landmark on The Underground Complex Map.

Layout
The Rift Lab consists of two floors:
The Upper Floor can be accessed by going up a staircase.
- The Lower Floor consists of a closed Lab Room, and the Rift, a portal to the Upside Down.
- The Upper Floor features multiple drop-offs.

The Interrogation Rooms are the secondary Landmark on The Underground Complex Map.

Easter Egg
Basement Secret Room
- There is a hidden room behind a closed, metal door located in the Rift Lab (one of the two possible locations of the Basement staircase).
It can only be accessed by The Nurse by blinking into the wall at that location, and only if the Basement staircase had spawned at the other location. - There are four dead scientists in the room, each one with a bottle in their hands.
There are also two cooling-crates with additional bottles scattered throughout the room, and a monitor and a PC on the floor.
The main element of the room is a whiteboard with the following writings/drawings on it:- "EGC"
This refers to the abbreviation for the then still relatively recent mechanic of the Endgame Collapse. - "[Xe] 4f14 5d10 6s1"
This refers to the electron configuration of the element Gold (Au). - A drawing of a molecule
This refers to the molecule formed by combining "terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol", which forms a compound "ethylene terephthalate", commonly referred to as "Polyester".- This is a reference to the YouTube Content Creator Paulie Esther, who was known for diving deep into Dead by Daylight's secrets.
- "EGC"
- The hidden room was added as a clue to the location of the Golden Toolbox as well.
Trivia
- In the game files The Underground Complex is referred to as "Lab".
Achievement Generator
- The Generator Players were tasked to repair in order to unlock the Map's Achievement is located in a small room on the uppermost floor of The Underground Complex.
- Said room is a padded cell into which Eleven was brought, before she used her abilities to telekinetically throw one of the two wardens bringing her there into the wall opposite the cell, leaving the tiled wall cracked and dent, before killing the other by telekinetically snapping his neck.
- The dented and cracked wall, as well as the bodies of the two wardens are visible in the Map in Dead by Daylight (see at around 4:10 to 4:15 in the memorial video).
Upside Down VFX
- One half to Map (the one closer to the Rift Lab) features the visual effects present in the Upside Down, with a grittier, darker colour palette as well as an effect similar floating pieces of ash in the air.
Exit Doors
- The Underground Complex is the first and still only Map to feature Exit Doors instead of Exit Gates.
- The main reasoning for this is the low ceiling of the Map preventing the Developers from placing proper Exit Gates.
- The opening animation is very different from Exit Gates too; both sides of the door slide to the sides and a metallic plate behind the door rise upwards.
- This opening-animation was directly inspired by the way the elevator inside the laboratory complex opened, through which the scientist wanted to escape, as seen in the opening scenes of the first episode of Stranger Things Season 1.
