However, some Killers do not follow that general rule and either have a different Terror Radius altogether or even multiple Terror Radii, as can be seen in the Table below.

  +
The Terror Radius has 2 components to it, the Heartbeat and the Terror Radius Layers.
Heartbeat
The Terror Radius causes a Survivor's very own heart to beat audibly.
The Heartbeat sound effect will get louder and quicker the closer in proximity the Survivor is to the Killer.
That it is indeed their own Heartbeat and not the Killer's, as Benedict's journal entry would imply, is confirmed by a Mysterious Note found in The Fog and by the actually visible, beating heart Dead by Daylight Mobile introduced into the Survivor model as a replacement for the audible Heartbeat in cases of Players playing without sound.

Terror Radius Music
+
The Heartbeat
The Terror Radius Music plays for Survivors whenever they are inside the Killer's Terror Radius.
The music gets progressively louder and more aggressive the closer in proximity the Killer is to them, but outside of a Chase.
+
The first component of a Killer's Terror Radius is the Heartbeat heard by Survivors whenever they are inside the Terror Radius.

  +
Benedict Baker's Journal confirms that it is indeed a Survivor's own heart that beats audibly whenever the Killer is nearby.
This is further confirmed by a "Mysterious Note" found in the Fog and by the visibly beating heart model in the chest of Survivors used in Dead by Daylight Mobile.
Older Killers generally use one of 2 available generic Terror Radius Music themes, whereas newer and reworked Killers have their own, unique Terror Radius Music.

  +
  +
The loudness and pace of the Heartbeat is tied directly to how close the Killer is to the Survivor in question.
  +
  +
Terror Radius Layers
  +
The second component of a Killer's Terror Radius are the Terror Radius Layers.
  +
  +
The Terror Radius Layers are the musical component of the Terror Radius.
Each Terror Radius features 6, with the possibility to add 8:

Layers 1, 2, 3
  +
Layers 1, 2, and 3 are used to signal proximity, akin to the Heartbeat.
They divide a Killer's Terror Radius into three equidistant radii, with each third of the Killer's Terror Radius playing one of the three Layers.
  +
  +
Layer 4
  +
Layer 4 is reserved for when the Killer is in a Chase with a Survivor and replaces the third Layer of the Terror Radius.
Layer 4 is also referred to as the Chase Music and is what the Killer will hear when in a Chase.
  +
  +
Layers 5, 6
  +
Layers 5 and 6 are reserved for additional music layers, which are added as embellishments on top of Layer 4 when the Killer is in a Chase, they do not replace other Layers.
This mechanic is currently only used for the Mix Tape Add-ons of The Legion.
  +
  +
Terror Radius Music
Older Killers generally use one of 10 available generic Terror Radius Music themes, whereas newer and reworked Killers have their own, unique Terror Radius Music.

  +
Older Killers, who have received a major rework, as well as all new Killers, have their own, unique Terror Radius Music, which makes them easily identifiable.
The Terror Radius Music has 6 layers to it; whenever the distance between a Killer and a Survivor undercuts the next quadrant of the maximum Terror Radius distance, the music seamlessly transitions to the next layer, which can be used to accurately gauge a Killer's proximity, based on the knowledge of a Killer's default Terror Radius range, given that the Killer does not use any Terror-Radius-altering Unlockables.

Chase Music
Chase Music
Killers do not hear their own Terror Radius music, instead they hear the general background music that plays on all Maps.
It is only when a Survivor initiates a Chase that the background music will be replaced by the Chase Music.
For all Killers that do not use either of the three generic Chase Music themes, the Chase Music is the same as the fourth layer of the Terror Radius music Survivors hear, which for them plays when the Killer is chasing them.
+
Killers do not hear their own Terror Radius music, instead they hear the general background music that plays on all Maps at all times until they enter a Chase with a Survivor.

  +
As soon as a Killer initiates a Chase, they will hear the Chase Music, which is equal to Layer 4 of the Terror Radius.
Two Killers were an exception to this and had a unique Chase Music, until that was changed to the fourth layer of their Terror Radius as well: The Demogorgon and The Oni.
Their unique Chase Music is still present in the files in the Table below.

  +
Originally, when the Developers had first started to give Killers their unique soundtrack, it was intended that the Chase Music was a completely unique track, distinct from Layer 4 of the Terror Radius and only ever heard by the Killer.
However, for unknown reasons, after releasing two Killers with a distinct Chase Music, The Demogorgon and The Oni (see Trivia section), the Developers abandoned that practice, eventually removing the unique Chase Music from those two Killers as well.
Akin to the Terror Radius Music, older Killers use one of 2 available generic Chase Music themes, whereas newer and reworked Killers have their own, unique Chase Music.

Lullabies
Some Killers, in addition to their Terror Radius, feature what is referred to as a Lullaby.
The name of the mechanic was derived from The Huntress' Lullaby, as she was the first Killer to feature one, and it is a literal children's lullaby in Russia.
Some newer Killers may have alternate names for the mechanic, but those are still considered Lullabies as far as game mechanics are concerned.

  +
A Lullaby works differently to the Terror Radius in the following ways:

  +
Non-Terror-Radii
  +
Some Killers have Terror-Radius-like mechanics that are, however, not considered to be true Terror Radii.
This includes mainly Lullabies and Fake Terror Radii.

Some Killers, in addition to their Terror Radius, feature what is referred to as a Lullaby.
  +
  +
With the exception of the name-giving Lullaby sung by The Huntress, as she was the introductory Killer of that mechanic, a Lullaby in Dead by Daylight merely refers to any Terror-Radius-like mechanic fulfilling the properties listed below, which are different from those of regular Terror Radii.
  +
  +
Other Killers with a Lullaby mechanic, generally refer to it under a different name:

The Terror Radius is an integral Game Mechanic in Template:IconLink.

Overview

The Terror Radius is a feature intended to induce fear and anxiety in Survivors, causing them to experience The Heartbeat, a sound effect triggered whenever Survivors enter the Killer's Terror Radius and intensifies with proximity.

Terror Radius

For most Killers in Dead by Daylight, their Terror Radius is decided by their base Movement speed: 32 metres for those moving at 4.6 m/s and 24 metres for those moving at 4.4 m/s.

However, some Killers do not follow that general rule and either have a different Terror Radius altogether or even multiple Terror Radii, as can be seen in the Table below.

The Terror Radius has 2 components to it, the Heartbeat and the Terror Radius Layers.

The Heartbeat

The first component of a Killer's Terror Radius is the Heartbeat heard by Survivors whenever they are inside the Terror Radius.

The loudness and pace of the Heartbeat is tied directly to how close the Killer is to the Survivor in question.

Terror Radius Layers

The second component of a Killer's Terror Radius are the Terror Radius Layers.

The Terror Radius Layers are the musical component of the Terror Radius.
Each Terror Radius features 4 distinct Layers, with the possibility to add 2 additional Layers:

Layer Proximity from Killer Use Case Additional Information
1 Far (1st Third) Terror Radius -
2 Near (2nd Third) Terror Radius -
3 Close (3rd Third) Terror Radius Replaced by Layer 4 when in Chase.
4 Chase (3rd Third) Chase Music Replaces Layer 3 when in Chase.
5 Chase (3rd Third) Chase Music Added in addition to Layer 4 when 1 Mix Tape Add-on is used.
6 Chase (3rd Third) Chase Music Added in addition to Layers 4 and 5 when 2 Mix Tape Add-ons are used.

Layers 1, 2, 3

Layers 1, 2, and 3 are used to signal proximity, akin to the Heartbeat.
They divide a Killer's Terror Radius into three equidistant radii, with each third of the Killer's Terror Radius playing one of the three Layers.

Layer 4

Layer 4 is reserved for when the Killer is in a Chase with a Survivor and replaces the third Layer of the Terror Radius.
Layer 4 is also referred to as the Chase Music and is what the Killer will hear when in a Chase.

Layers 5, 6

Layers 5 and 6 are reserved for additional music layers, which are added as embellishments on top of Layer 4 when the Killer is in a Chase, they do not replace other Layers.
This mechanic is currently only used for the Mix Tape Add-ons of The Template:IconLink.

Terror Radius Music

Older Killers generally use one of 6 available generic Terror Radius Music themes, whereas newer and reworked Killers have their own, unique Terror Radius Music.

Older Killers, who have received a major rework, as well as all new Killers, have their own, unique Terror Radius Music, which makes them easily identifiable.

Chase Music

Killers do not hear their own Terror Radius music, instead they hear the general background music that plays on all Maps at all times until they enter a Chase with a Survivor.

As soon as a Killer initiates a Chase, they will hear the Chase Music, which is equal to Layer 4 of the Terror Radius.

Originally, when the Developers had first started to give Killers their unique soundtrack, it was intended that the Chase Music was a completely unique track, distinct from Layer 4 of the Terror Radius and only ever heard by the Killer.
However, for unknown reasons, after releasing two Killers with a distinct Chase Music, The Template:IconLink and The Template:IconLink (see Trivia section), the Developers abandoned that practice, eventually removing the unique Chase Music from those two Killers as well.

Akin to the Terror Radius Music, older Killers use one of 3 available generic Chase Music themes, whereas newer and reworked Killers have their own, unique Chase Music.

Non-Terror-Radii

Some Killers have Terror-Radius-like mechanics that are, however, not considered to be true Terror Radii.
This includes mainly Lullabies and Fake Terror Radii.

Lullaby

Some Killers, in addition to their Terror Radius, feature what is referred to as a Lullaby.

With the exception of the name-giving Lullaby sung by The Template:IconLink, as she was the introductory Killer of that mechanic, a Lullaby in Dead by Daylight merely refers to any Terror-Radius-like mechanic fulfilling the properties listed below, which are different from those of regular Terror Radii.

Other Killers with a Lullaby mechanic, generally refer to it under a different name:

Lullaby properties:

  • Lullabies are non-directional.
  • Lullabies have a fixed, unalterable range.
    • Lullabies are not affected by Unlockables that influence the Terror Radius.
    • Lullabies are not suppressed by the Template:IconLink Status Effect.

Killers with a Lullaby:

  • The Template:IconLink: She hums a literal children's Lullaby, refers to the mechanic as a Lullaby.
  • The Template:IconLink: Survivors hear a nursery rhyme when inside the Dream World, refers to the mechanic as a Lullaby.
  • The Template:IconLink: Victor emits shrieks and groans when he is not with Charlotte, refers to the mechanic as Shrieks.
  • The Template:IconLink: He emits a modified version of the first layer of his Terror Radius, refers to the mechanic as a Melody.
  • The Template:IconLink: She emits a metallic screeching noise while Demanifested and inside the Otherworld, refers to the mechanic as a Lullaby.

Fake Terror Radius

Some Killers have the ability to alter their Power in a way that produces a Fake Terror Radius, which serves to confuse a Survivor.

Fake Terror Radius properties:

  • Fake Terror Radii are auditorily indiscernible from a regular Terror Radius.
  • Fake Terror Radii have a fixed, unalterable range.
    • Fake Terror Radii are not affected by Unlockables that influence the Terror Radius.
    • Fake Terror Radii do not interact with any Unlockables that require the presence of an actual Terror Radius to activate/charge.
      • Perks like Template:IconLink or Template:IconLink will not charge their Tokens while inside a Fake Terror Radius, which can be used to distinguish it from a real one.
      • Perks like Template:IconLink will not trigger the Template:IconLink Status Effect for Survivors inside a Fake Terror Radius.

Killers with a Fake Terror Radius:

  • The Template:IconLink: the Terror Radius emitted by a Mud Phantasm is a Fake Terror Radius.
  • The Template:IconLink: the Illusionary Terror Radii inflicted by the Template:IconLink or Template:IconLink Add-on Series is a Fake Terror Radius.

Undetectable Mechanic

There are several Unlockables, as well as Killer Powers, that can temporarily cloak a Killer's Terror Radius, all of which apply the Template:IconLink Status Effect.

  • The Template:IconLink cloaking himself and entering the Spirit World.
  • The Template:IconLink using the Template:IconLink or the Template:IconLink.
  • The Template:IconLink using the Template:IconLink.
  • The Template:IconLink while remaining in Evil Within I.
  • The Template:IconLink using the Template:IconLink.
  • The Template:IconLink using the Template:IconLink.
  • The Template:IconLink crouching.
  • The Template:IconLink using Night Shroud.
  • The Template:IconLink after traversing the Upside Down.
  • The Template:IconLink using the Template:IconLink.
  • The Template:IconLink using the Template:IconLink.
  • The Template:IconLink using the Template:IconLink.
  • The Template:IconLink using the Template:IconLink.
  • The Template:IconLink using the Template:IconLink.
  • The Template:IconLink using the Template:IconLink.
  • The Template:IconLink using the Template:IconLink.
  • The Template:IconLink while Demanifested.

Trivia

  • Unlockables that affect a Terror Radius via a percentage tend to apply that on top of the base Terror Radius, ignoring other Unlockables that affect it by a concrete numerical value.
