Terror Radius
A Killer's Terror Radius is generally set to 2 for those moving at 6 or at 8 for those moving at 4.<br>However, there are some Killers that do not follow this general rule and have a different Terror Radius and sometimes multiple Terror Radii (see Table below).
+
For most Killers in Dead by Daylight, their Terror Radius is decided by their base Movement speed: 2 for those moving at 6 and 8 for those moving at 4.

  +
However, some Killers do not follow that general rule and either have a different Terror Radius altogether or even multiple Terror Radii, as can be seen in the Table below.
Status Effect
There are several Unlockables that can temporarily cloak a Killer's Terror Radius, all of which apply the Undetectable Status Effect.

Powers
+
Heartbeat
The Terror Radius causes a Survivor's very own heart to beat audibly.<br>The Heartbeat sound effect will get louder and quicker the closer in proximity the Survivor is to the Killer.<br>That it is indeed their own Heartbeat and not the Killer's, as Benedict's journal entry would imply, is confirmed by a Mysterious Note found in The Fog and by the actually visible, beating heart Dead by Daylight Mobile introduced into the Survivor model as a replacement for the audible Heartbeat in cases of Players playing without sound.
Some Killer Powers will temporarily cloak their Terror Radius upon use:

* The Wraith cloaking himself and entering the Spirit World.

* The Shape while remaining in Evil Within I.

* The Hag using the Grandma's Heart.

* The Pig crouching.

* The Ghost Face using Night Shroud.

* The Demogorgon after traversing the Upside Down.

The Terror Radius Music plays for Survivors whenever they are inside the Killer's Terror Radius.<br>The music gets progressively louder and more aggressive the closer in proximity the Killer is to them, but outside of a Chase.

The Terror Radius Music has 6 layers to it; whenever the distance between a Killer and a Survivor undercuts the next quadrant of the maximum Terror Radius distance, the music seamlessly transitions to the next layer, which can be used to accurately gauge a Killer's proximity, based on the knowledge of a Killer's default Terror Radius range, given that the Killer does not use any Terror-Radius-altering Unlockables.

Chase Music
Killers do not hear their own Terror Radius music, instead they hear the general background music that plays on all Maps.<br>It is only when a Survivor initiates a Chase that the background music will be replaced by the Chase Music.<br>The Chase Music is similar to the Terror Radius Music, but without the aforementioned layering based on distance.<br>In a Chase, it will be heard by both the Killer and the Survivor.
+
Killers do not hear their own Terror Radius music, instead they hear the general background music that plays on all Maps.<br>It is only when a Survivor initiates a Chase that the background music will be replaced by the Chase Music.<br>For all Killers that do not use either of the three generic Chase Music themes, the Chase Music is the same as the fourth layer of the Terror Radius music Survivors hear, which for them plays when the Killer is at closest proximity.
  +
  +
Two Killers were an exception to this and had a unique Chase Music, until that was changed to the fourth layer of their Terror Radius as well: The Demogorgon and The Oni.<br>Their unique Chase Music is still present in the files in the Table below.

Akin to the Terror Radius Music, older Killers use one of 2 available generic Chase Music themes, whereas newer and reworked Killers have their own, unique Chase Music.

  +
  +
Lullabies
  +
Some Killers, in addition to their Terror Radius, feature what is referred to as a Lullaby.<br>The name of the mechanic was derived from The Huntress' Lullaby, as she was the first Killer to feature one, and it is a literal children's lullaby in Russia.<br>Some newer Killers may have alternate names for the mechanic, but those are still considered Lullabies as far as game mechanics are concerned.
  +
  +
A Lullaby works differently to the Terror Radius in the following ways:
  +
* Lullabies are non-directional.
  +
* Lullabies have a fixed, unalterable range.
  +
** Lullabies are unaffected by Unlockables changing the range of the Terror Radius.
  +
** Lullabies cannot be suppressed with the Undetectable Status Effect.
  +
  +
The following Killers have a Lullaby:
  +
* The Huntress: hums a literal Lullaby
  +
* The Nightmare: emits a Nursery rhyme in the Dream World
  +
* The Twins: Victor's Shrieks
  +
* The Trickster: emits a Melody
  +
  +
Fake Terror Radii
  +
Some Killers have the ability to alter their Power in a way that produces a fake Terror Radius, which serves to confuse a Survivor.
  +
  +
Fake Terror Radii do 8 interact with any Unlockables, such as Perks like Diversion or Stake Out (charging up Tokens) or Starstruck (triggering the Exposed Status Effect).
  +
  +
Examples of a fake Terror Radius is that emitted by The Hag's Mud Phantasms or the Illusionary Terror Radius induced by The Doctor's "Calm" Add-ons.
  +

Undetectable Status Effect
There are several Unlockables, as well as Killer Powers, that can temporarily cloak a Killer's Terror Radius, all of which apply the Undetectable Status Effect.

* The Wraith cloaking himself and entering the Spirit World.
  +
* The Hillbilly using the Leafy Mash or the Iridescent Brick.
  +
* The Nurse using the "Bad Man's" Last Breath.

* The Shape while remaining in Evil Within I.

* The Hag using the Grandma's Heart.
  +
* The Huntress using the Wooden Fox.

* The Pig crouching.

* The Ghost Face using Night Shroud.

* The Demogorgon after traversing the Upside Down.
  +
* The Executioner using the Obsidian Goblet.
  +
* The Blight using the Vigo's Journal.
  +
* The Twins using the Silencing Cloth.
  +
* The Nemesis T-Type using the Serotonin Injector.

Dbd-journal-heartbeat Quotes left Maybe it is the will to survive that makes me even more alert to sounds. Sight is limited in this darkened part of the world. In this case their heartbeats. Not my own, but instead the Killers' as they close in on me. I just hope that they do not pick up on mine as my heart races for every thump I can hear even clearer. Quotes right
~ Benedict Baker's Journal, Nov. 1896

The Terror Radius is an integral Game Mechanic in Template:IconLink.

Overview

The Terror Radius is a feature intended to induce fear and anxiety in Survivors, causing them to experience The Heartbeat, a sound effect triggered whenever Survivors enter the Killer's Terror Radius and intensifies with proximity.

Terror Radius

For most Killers in Dead by Daylight, their Terror Radius is decided by their base Movement speed: 32 metres for those moving at 4.6 m/s and 24 metres for those moving at 4.4 m/s.

However, some Killers do not follow that general rule and either have a different Terror Radius altogether or even multiple Terror Radii, as can be seen in the Table below.

Heartbeat

The Terror Radius causes a Survivor's very own heart to beat audibly.
The Heartbeat sound effect will get louder and quicker the closer in proximity the Survivor is to the Killer.
That it is indeed their own Heartbeat and not the Killer's, as Benedict's journal entry would imply, is confirmed by a Mysterious Note found in The Fog and by the actually visible, beating heart Dead by Daylight Mobile introduced into the Survivor model as a replacement for the audible Heartbeat in cases of Players playing without sound.

Terror Radius Music

The Terror Radius Music plays for Survivors whenever they are inside the Killer's Terror Radius.
The music gets progressively louder and more aggressive the closer in proximity the Killer is to them, but outside of a Chase.

Older Killers generally use one of 6 available generic Terror Radius Music themes, whereas newer and reworked Killers have their own, unique Terror Radius Music.

The Terror Radius Music has 4 layers to it; whenever the distance between a Killer and a Survivor undercuts the next quadrant of the maximum Terror Radius distance, the music seamlessly transitions to the next layer, which can be used to accurately gauge a Killer's proximity, based on the knowledge of a Killer's default Terror Radius range, given that the Killer does not use any Terror-Radius-altering Unlockables.

Chase Music

Killers do not hear their own Terror Radius music, instead they hear the general background music that plays on all Maps.
It is only when a Survivor initiates a Chase that the background music will be replaced by the Chase Music.
For all Killers that do not use either of the three generic Chase Music themes, the Chase Music is the same as the fourth layer of the Terror Radius music Survivors hear, which for them plays when the Killer is at closest proximity.

Two Killers were an exception to this and had a unique Chase Music, until that was changed to the fourth layer of their Terror Radius as well: The Demogorgon and The Oni.
Their unique Chase Music is still present in the files in the Table below.

Akin to the Terror Radius Music, older Killers use one of 3 available generic Chase Music themes, whereas newer and reworked Killers have their own, unique Chase Music.

Lullabies

Some Killers, in addition to their Terror Radius, feature what is referred to as a Lullaby.
The name of the mechanic was derived from The Huntress' Lullaby, as she was the first Killer to feature one, and it is a literal children's lullaby in Russia.
Some newer Killers may have alternate names for the mechanic, but those are still considered Lullabies as far as game mechanics are concerned.

A Lullaby works differently to the Terror Radius in the following ways:

  • Lullabies are non-directional.
  • Lullabies have a fixed, unalterable range.
    • Lullabies are unaffected by Unlockables changing the range of the Terror Radius.
    • Lullabies cannot be suppressed with the Template:IconLink Status Effect.

The following Killers have a Lullaby:

  • The Template:IconLink: hums a literal Lullaby
  • The Template:IconLink: emits a Nursery rhyme in the Dream World
  • The Template:IconLink: Victor's Shrieks
  • The Template:IconLink: emits a Melody

Fake Terror Radii

Some Killers have the ability to alter their Power in a way that produces a fake Terror Radius, which serves to confuse a Survivor.

Fake Terror Radii do not interact with any Unlockables, such as Template:IconLink like Template:IconLink or Template:IconLink (charging up Tokens) or Template:IconLink (triggering the Template:IconLink Status Effect).

Examples of a fake Terror Radius is that emitted by The Hag's Mud Phantasms or the Illusionary Terror Radius induced by The Doctor's Template:IconLink Add-ons.

Undetectable Status Effect

There are several Unlockables, as well as Killer Powers, that can temporarily cloak a Killer's Terror Radius, all of which apply the Template:IconLink Status Effect.

  • The Template:IconLink cloaking himself and entering the Spirit World.
  • The Template:IconLink using the Template:IconLink or the Template:IconLink.

Trivia

  • Unlockables that affect a Terror Radius via a percentage tend to apply that on top of the base Terror Radius, ignoring other Unlockables that affect it by a concrete numerical value.
