Dead by Daylight Wiki
Maybe it is the will to survive that makes me even more alert to sounds. Sight is limited in this darkened part of the world. In this case their heartbeats. Not my own, but instead the Killers' as they close in on me. I just hope that they do not pick up on mine as my heart races for every thump I can hear even clearer.
~ Benedict Baker's Journal, Nov. 1896
Again, my senses have proven to be the keys to my survival. If my heartbeat rings in my ears, the Killer is close. If I see the "red stain" in my surroundings, the Killer is even closer!
~ Mysterious Note

The Terror Radius is an integral Game Mechanic in Dead by Daylight.

Overview

The Terror Radius is a feature intended to induce fear and anxiety in Survivors, causing them to experience The Heartbeat, a sound effect triggered whenever Survivors enter the Killer's Terror Radius and intensifies with proximity.

Terror Radius

For most Killers in Dead by Daylight, their Terror Radius is decided by their base Movement speed: 32 metres for those moving at 4.6 m/s and 24 metres for those moving at 4.4 m/s.

However, some Killers do not follow that general rule and either have a different Terror Radius altogether or even multiple Terror Radii, as can be seen in the Table below.

The Terror Radius has 2 components to it, the Heartbeat and the Terror Radius Layers.

The Heartbeat

The first component of a Killer's Terror Radius is the Heartbeat heard by Survivors whenever they are inside the Terror Radius.

Benedict Baker's Journal confirms that it is indeed a Survivor's own heart that beats audibly whenever the Killer is nearby.
This is further confirmed by a "Mysterious Note" found in the Fog and by the visibly beating heart model in the chest of Survivors.

The loudness and pace of the Heartbeat is tied directly to how close the Killer is to the Survivor in question.

Terror Radius Layers

The second component of a Killer's Terror Radius are the Terror Radius Layers.

The Terror Radius Layers are the musical component of the Terror Radius.
Each Terror Radius features 4 distinct Layers, with the possibility to add 2 additional Layers:

Layer Proximity from Killer Use Case Additional Information
1 Far (1st Third) Terror Radius -
2 Near (2nd Third) Terror Radius -
3 Close (3rd Third) Terror Radius Replaced by Layer 4 when in Chase.
4 Chase (3rd Third) Chase Music Replaces Layer 3 when in Chase.
5 Chase (3rd Third) Chase Music Added in addition to Layer 4 when 1 Mix Tape Add-on is used.
6 Chase (3rd Third) Chase Music Added in addition to Layers 4 and 5 when 2 Mix Tape Add-ons are used.

Layers 1, 2, 3

Layers 1, 2, and 3 are used to signal proximity, akin to the Heartbeat.
They divide a Killer's Terror Radius into three equidistant radii, with each third of the Killer's Terror Radius playing one of the three Layers.

Layer 4

Layer 4 is reserved for when the Killer is in a Chase with a Survivor and replaces the third Layer of the Terror Radius.
Layer 4 is also referred to as the Chase Music and is what the Killer will hear when in a Chase.

Layers 5, 6

Layers 5 and 6 are reserved for additional music layers, which are added as embellishments on top of Layer 4 when the Killer is in a Chase, they do not replace other Layers.
This mechanic is currently only used for the Mix Tape Add-ons of The Legion.

Terror Radius Music

For a list of Terror Radius tracks and their instrumentation, click here.

Older Killers generally use one of 6 available generic Terror Radius Music themes, whereas newer and reworked Killers have their own, unique Terror Radius Music.

Older Killers, who have received a major rework, as well as all new Killers, have their own, unique Terror Radius Music, which makes them easily identifiable.

Chase Music

Killers do not hear their own Terror Radius music, instead they hear the general background music that plays on all Maps at all times until they enter a Chase with a Survivor.

As soon as a Killer initiates a Chase, they will hear the Chase Music, which is equal to Layer 4 of the Terror Radius.

Originally, when the Developers had first started to give Killers their unique soundtrack, it was intended that the Chase Music was a completely unique track, distinct from Layer 4 of the Terror Radius and only ever heard by the Killer.
However, for unknown reasons, after releasing two Killers with a distinct Chase Music, The Demogorgon and The Oni (see Trivia section), the Developers abandoned that practice, eventually removing the unique Chase Music from those two Killers as well.

Akin to the Terror Radius Music, older Killers use one of 3 available generic Chase Music themes, whereas newer and reworked Killers have their own, unique Chase Music.

Non-Terror-Radii

Some Killers have Terror-Radius-like mechanics that are, however, not considered to be true Terror Radii.
This includes mainly Lullabies and Fake Terror Radii.

Lullaby

Some Killers, in addition to their Terror Radius, feature what is referred to as a Lullaby.

The term "Lullaby" originates from the literal lullaby hummed by The Huntress, who was the first Killer to feature that mechanic and thus became the name-giver of it.
This is the reason why every Killer featuring the mechanic has it referred to as a "Lullaby", even though the audio cue itself may have nothing to do with lullabies or nursery rhymes, it is simply a name for a mechanic, in order to be consistent in the game's code.

Therefore, a Lullaby refers to any Terror-Radius-like audio cue which fulfils the properties listed below, which are different from those of a regular Terror Radius.

Properties

  • Lullabies are usually non-directional, though there are some exceptions:
    • The Trickster has a distance-based non-directional Lullaby, allowing Players to gauge his distance based on the volume level, but not the direction.
    • The Onryō has a directional Lullaby.[1].
    • The Dark Lord has a variable Lullaby, working like a non-directional Lullaby at a distance and like a directional Lullaby at a closer range.
  • Lullabies have a fixed, unalterable range.
    • Lullabies are not affected by Unlockables that influence the Terror Radius.
    • Lullabies are not suppressed by the Undetectable Status Effect.
      • Currently, the only for a Killer to suppress their Lullaby is for them to hide inside a Snowman, which only spawn during the recurring Bone Chill Winter Event series.

Lullaby-Killers

  • The Huntress: she hums a literal children's Lullaby; refers to the mechanic as a Lullaby.
  • The Nightmare: Survivors hear a nursery rhyme when inside the Dream World; refers to the mechanic as a Lullaby.
  • The Twins: Victor emits shrieks and groans when he is not with Charlotte; refers to the mechanic as Shrieks.
  • The Trickster: he emits a modified version of the first layer of his Terror Radius; refers to the mechanic as a Melody.
  • The Onryō: she emits a metallic screeching noise and the sound of ocean waves crashing while Demanifested and inside the Otherworld; refers to the mechanic as a Lullaby.
  • The Dark Lord: he emits bat shrieks and wing flapping sounds while in Bat Form.

It should be noted that even if the game refers to a Killer's Lullaby under a different (more appropriate) name, it is still coded as a "Lullaby" in the game's code.

Fake Terror Radius

Some Killers have the ability to alter their Power in a way that produces a Fake Terror Radius, which serves to confuse a Survivor.

Properties

  • Fake Terror Radii are auditorily indiscernible from a regular Terror Radius.
  • Fake Terror Radii have a fixed, unalterable range.
    • Fake Terror Radii are not affected by Unlockables that influence the Terror Radius.
    • Fake Terror Radii do not interact with any Unlockables that require the presence of an actual Terror Radius to activate/charge.
      • Perks like Diversion or Stake Out will not charge their Tokens while inside a Fake Terror Radius, which can be used to distinguish it from a real one.
      • Perks like Starstruck will not trigger the Exposed Status Effect for Survivors inside a Fake Terror Radius.

Fake-TR-Killers

  • The Hag: the Terror Radius emitted by a Mud Phantasm is a Fake Terror Radius.
  • The Doctor: the Illusionary Terror Radii inflicted by the "Calm" or "Discipline" Add-on Series is a Fake Terror Radius.
  • The Singularity: The Terror Radius inflicted by the Hyperawareness Spray Add-on is a Fake Terror Radius.

Visual Terror Radius

VisualTerrorRadius beatingHeart

Beating Heart

VisualTerrorRadius heartBeatThroughLocker

Beating Heart shown inside a Locker

The Visual Terror Radius is an accessibility mechanic which can be enabled in the options menu.

When enabled, the Survivor's character model will show a literal heart beating in their chest whenever they are inside the Killer's Terror Radius.
The intensity of the beating heart corresponds to and is precisely in sync with the auditory heartbeat SFX, which is heard in addition to the Terror Radius music.

The heart VFX is visible even when the Survivor's character model is hidden, for example inside a Locker.

Off-Screen Indicator

VisualTerrorRadius offScreenIndicator

Off-screen Indicator

When the Survivor's chest is off-screen, a HUD overlay of a heart will be shown in the centre of the screen, should the Survivor be within the Terror Radius or the Lullaby Radius, informing the Player that they might want to adjust their camera to make the Survivor's chest and heart visible again.

Lullaby Indicator

VisualTerrorRadius LullabyIndicator

Lullaby Indicator

Should a Survivor be inside the Lullaby Radius of a Killer, a swirling red haze will be shown in their chest instead of a beating heart.
Just as auditory Lullabies are non-directional and do not allow Survivors to gauge the Killer's distance from them, the haze does not change in its intensity either.

Undetectable Mechanic

There are several Unlockables, as well as Killer Powers, that can temporarily cloak a Killer's Terror Radius, all of which apply the Undetectable Status Effect.
The list below only lists Killer Powers or Add-ons of said Power that grant Undetectable, as Perks doing so allow any Killer to become Undetectable.

Trivia

  • Unlockables that affect the Terror Radius by a percentage tend to apply that on top of the base Terror Radius, ignoring other Unlockables that affect it by a concrete numerical value.
  • Survivors who are hooked do not hear the Terror Radius.

Old Terror Radii

  • Originally, both The Demogorgon and The Oni had a unique Chase Music from the Killer's POV. Survivors would still hear the Killer's normal Terror Radii near the Killer and in Chase. These themes were removed a while later in an unspecified patch, and replaced by their default chase themes.
    • The Oni's unique Chase Music was his PTB Chase Music while the Demogorgon's Chase Music was its current nearby layer.
