Killing is a Game Mechanic in Dead by Daylight that has been in the Game from Day One.
Overview[]
Killing refers to the act of the Killer killing a Survivor by their own hands, bypassing the usual Sacrifice Process of hooking them onto a Hook.
Killing was originally only accessible to Killers who had burnt one of the 3 Memento Mori Offerings, hence why the ability is also known as a Mori and the act itself as Mori-ing a Survivor.
A handful of Killers have access to a so-called Mini-Mori in their base-kit, which is usually less cinematic and much quicker than the standard Mori.
With the implementation of the Finisher Mori in Patch 8.3.0, the ability to kill the Last Survivor Standing has become base-kit for all Killers.
Memento Moris[]
The Memento Moris are a series of 2 (formerly 3) Offerings that grant the Killer the ability to kill Survivors that are on Death Hook (i.e. have accumulated 2 Hook Stages by any means).
How many Survivors the Killer is allowed to kill depends on which of the two Offerings was burnt:
- Ivory Memento Mori: 1 Survivor
- Ebony Memento Mori: 4 Survivors
With the introduction of the Finisher Mori in Patch 8.3.0, which usurped the effect of the Cypress Memento Mori, said Offering was retired.
Finisher Mori[]
The Finisher Mori grants the Killer the ability to perform a Mori on the Last Survivor Standing, once they are put into the Dying State, killing them by their own hand, instead of sacrificing them on a Hook.
It was implemented as a base-kit ability with Patch 8.3.0, usurping the functionality of the since retired Cypress Memento Mori Offering.
The Finisher Mori is entirely optional and Killers may decide to just sacrifice the last Survivor or let them go.
Mini-Mori[]
A handful of Killers have a so-called Mini-Mori in their base-kit or as an added ability when using specific Add-ons, granting the same ability to kill Survivors as a regular Mori, but usually with a shorter and less cinematic animation:
The Shape[]
- This ability is not technically known as a Mini-Mori, as that was not a concept yet at the time this Killer released.
When The Shape has either the Tombstone Piece or the Judith's Tombstone Add-on equipped, he is granted the ability to kill healthy or injured Survivors while on Evil Within III.
The Pig[]
- This ability is not technically known as a Mini-Mori, as that was not a concept yet at the time this Killer released.
When Survivors with an Active Reverse Bear Trap attempt to leave the Trial through the Exit Gates or the Trap's timer elapses, they are instantly killed.
Due to issues with the Emblem System, this ability no longer counts as a kill, but as a sacrifice instead.
The Executioner[]
- This was the original ability to introduce the concept of Mini-Moris.
The Executioner may kill any Tormented Survivor with a Mini-Mori once they are in the Dying State and have accumulated 2 Hook Stages.
The Onryō[]
When a Survivor becomes fully Condemned, The Onryō is granted the ability to kill them, once they are in the Dying State.
The Lich[]
The Lich may kill any Survivor who has attuned themselves to either the Eye of Vecna or the Hand of Vecna, once they are in the Dying State and have accumulated 2 Hook Stages.

Trivia[]
- The Killer can not be blinded or stunned during a Mori.
- In-game, the act of killing a Survivor is often referred to as "Kill by your own hands".
- Killing bypasses the regular Hook-based Sacrifice mechanic and thus does not count towards any Achievements or Challenges that require Sacrifices.
- Survivors who have been killed will show a different skull icon on the HUD, compared to those that have been sacrificed.
- During early development, the Killers were always able to choose whether to sacrifice or kill the Survivors.
- The Developers ultimately decided that that base mechanic gave the Killer too much of an advantage and reworked it into the Memento Mori Offerings instead.
- "Memento Mori" is a Latin saying, which translates to "Remember Death/Remember Mortality". It is intended to remind humans of their mortality and the inevitable closure of death.
