''As I journeyed through the foggy veils that demarcate the realms of this place, I saw that, for the first time, I was not alone. Something traversed these forgotten byways, its bright colors still clearly visible, even through the muting effect of the mist that roiled between us.

As we emerged into a new, yet somehow familiar, place, I saw it clearly for the first time: a carney's caravan, pulled by something that appeared to be a horse but was, to my eyes, older and more terrible.

I watched from the trees as a crack appeared at the doorway and a warm, golden light spilled forth into this desolate place. The effect was, I suspect, deliberately inviting, but the figure that emerged was anything but: its costume a hodgepodge of ringmaster, clown and other fairground attire. Its face was a nightmare in greasepaint, a caricature of a smile slashed across its flabby lips. At its waist were a collection of what looked for all the world like fingers. But what creature would be so monstrous as to collect such trophies?

The Clown surveyed its new surrounding and its gaze lit on me. A rictus split its face in two and it nodded at me before returning to the caravan. I suspect that it prefers its victims to be less aware than I, and I thanked the stars for that.''

Jeffrey Hawk or "The Clown" is one of 38 Killers currently featured in Dead by Daylight.

He was introduced as the Killer of CHAPTER 8: Curtain Call, a Chapter DLC released on 12 June 2018 and retired on 8 January 2024.

He is still available in the In-Game Store and as part of the Maddening Darkness Pack Chapter Pack DLC.

Overview

Using his Afterpiece concoctions, The Clown can steer Survivors into dangerous areas and shorten chases. His purple bottle emits a cloud of noxious gas that disorients, slows down, and hinders Survivors. Throwing the yellow bottle requires foresight, as anyone who passes through the gas experiences a speed burst.

The Clown is a strategic Killer, able to control and corral Survivors by throwing bottles of The Afterpiece Tonic to create clouds of noxious gas that cover large areas for a short amount of time. Survivors intoxicated by the gas are inflicted with impaired vision and movement speed, and give away their location by coughing loudly.

His personal Perks, Bamboozle, Coulrophobia, and Pop Goes the Weasel, provide vaulting advantages and negatively impact Survivor Healing speed and Repairs.

He has a surprising agility for a man of his size, along with a terrifying appearance and the ability to sabotage the Survivor's efforts.

Difficulty Rating: Moderate
(These Killers require the Player to be comfortable with the basics of the role, though they share common mechanics with easier ones)

Lore

Additional Lore can be found in Tome 8 - Deliverance: Finger of Chaos.

Kenneth Chase was born in 1932 by a difficult labour, which his mother wouldn't survive. This event drove a rift between him and his father that never closed. As the boy grew, so did his father's resentment, and his drinking habit. By the time Kenneth was at school, they lived mostly separate lives.

Academically, he was unremarkable, coasting by on his significant athletic prowess. He grew tall and strong, excelling at track events, but shunned any attempts to coax him into team sports.

On his walk home from school, he would often find feathers on the ground and he soon began a collection, keeping them in a cigar box under his bed. With his father either at work or in an alcohol-induced stupor, Kenneth had hours to spend alone, transfixed by the regularity of the feathers' barbs and the feeling of softness as he ran them over his lips. Watching the birds that came to the feeder in his garden, he imagined how soft they must be and resolved to catch one. He ingratiated himself with the local dentist, soon procuring some anaesthetic. Using this, he rigged up a trap on the feeder, that he hoped would knock out a bird long enough that he could touch it.

After a few failed attempts, he managed to trap a robin. As it lay in his hand, he felt a sudden rush, of a life at his mercy. He had planned to release it once it recovered from the anaesthetic. Instead, as its eyes flickered back into consciousness and it began to struggle, his grip remained firm. His fingers slowly tightened around its throat, squeezing until its chest feathers were finally still. He disposed of the body, keeping just a feather, with which he started a new collection, discarding the others as "fake".

By the late 1940s, Kenneth had left school and started working as a busboy at a local diner. He had also escalated to larger prey, like squirrels, raccoons and dogs, becoming skilled at customising the anaesthetic dosage for each.

In early 1954, a young man went missing and the town was turned upside down in the search. A few months later, Kenneth's father, while doing some work in the crawlspace under the house, found a cigar box. He broke it open and saw, to his horror, that it contained feathers, animal paws, and a man's finger.

Returning from work, Kenneth saw his father leaving the crawlspace with a cigar box in his hands. He turned on his heel and never went home again.

After a few weeks of living rough, he encountered a travelling circus and, with his prodigious strength, was hired to work the ropes. He assumed a new name: Jeffrey Hawk.

Suddenly surrounded by a close-knit community, "Jeffrey" had to learn to socialise. He donned a new personality like a disguise, quickly becoming known as charming and helpful, and was welcomed into his new family.

Over the next decade, he stayed with the circus, travelling the length and breadth of the United States. But, with the itinerant life providing few repercussions, he fell into bad habits. Drinks, junk food, drugs, he indulged in all of them to excess. For a time, these vices were enough, but then his old urges returned and his nomadic existence became a cover for him to resume killing. He stole clothes and make-up from performers, fashioning a disguise that would let him get close to his victims before he anaesthetised them, bringing them back to his caravan, where they would awake to find themselves bound and at his mercy. He would finally get to have his fun, mentally and physically torturing them, their screams fuelling him, before being lost in the night.

Once their strength was at its lowest, he would carefully examine their fingers, searching for the prettiest, running them over his tongue to find the tastiest. Once he found the best, he would cut it from their hand and proudly add it to his collection, disposing of the rest of the body as pointless waste.

Men, women, young, old, he didn't care. The essence of a good collection is in the variety, in the memories and stories they evoke.

He removed the costume less and less, shedding his old personality with it, fully embracing the clown, his true self.

With time, he became complacent and sloppy. A victim managed to work free of her bindings while he was sleeping off the drink. She escaped, screaming for help, and he awoke to find the rest of the circus bearing down on him. He whipped his horse and the caravan disappeared into the night.

Since then he has roamed the country, a parasite who could always be found at a carnival or circus, but who would never be seen on any playbill. He lured those brave, or foolish enough, to come near, trapped them and moved on before they could be found missing.

Somewhere along the way, he left the ordinary roads of the United States behind him, travelling through a veil of mist and entering a new realm. It was a place of transience and impermanence, perfectly suiting the life he had chosen to lead. Feeling more at home than he had in his entire life, he set up camp and waited for his first visitor.

His favourite, The Afterpiece Tonic, he has used to great effect, intoxicating and capturing many unwilling victims.
The associated Afterpiece Antidote also has useful effects."

  • Reduces his Movement speed to 1.61 m/s.

SPECIAL AFFLICTION: TONIC
Upon impact, the Tonic Bottle breaks, releasing a purple Gas Cloud that intoxicates Survivors upon contact and while inside it.
The Clown is immune to its effects.

Intoxicated Survivors suffer from the following effects while inside the Gas Cloud:

  • Causes impaired vision.
  • Causes involuntary coughing.
  • Suppresses the ability to perform Fast Vaults.
  • Reduces all Movement speeds through a -15 % Hindered Status Effect.

These effects linger for 2 seconds after leaving the Gas Cloud.

SPECIAL BENEFIT: ANTIDOTE
Upon impact, the Antidote Bottle breaks, releasing an inactive white Gas Cloud.
The Gas Cloud will turn yellow after 2 seconds and invigorate all Players upon contact.

Invigorated Players benefit from the following effect:

  • Increases all Movement speeds through a +10 % Haste Status Effect for 6 seconds.

SPECIAL INTERACTION: NEUTRALISATION

Change Log

Patch 3.2.2

  • QoL: adjusted the projectile-throwing interaction to increase its responsiveness.

Patch 4.0.0

  • Buff: removed the Movement Speed slow-down after throwing a Bottle.

Patch 4.5.0

  • Rework: reworked The Afterpiece Tonic and a majority of its Add-ons.
    • Buff: added a secondary Power, The Afterpiece Antidote, which can affect both The Clown and Survivors, temporarily boosting their Movement speed.
    • Buff: reduced the Reload time from 5 seconds to 3 seconds.
    • QoL: adjusted some Add-ons to benefit from the new secondary power.
    • Change: changed the effects of the Gas Clouds when hitting elevated surfaces, expanding into different areas rather than coating a single spot on walls or elevated positions.
  • Change: The Clown now features a unique Terror Radius and Chase Music.
  • QoL: updated and increased level-of-detail of The Clown's character model and his visual effects.

Unknown Patch

  • Change: reassessed the difficulty rating from Hard to Moderate.

Patch 7.6.0

  • Buff: increased the duration of the Antidote speed boost from 5 seconds to 6 seconds.
  • Buff: reduced the Activation delay of the Antidote Gas Cloud from 2.5 seconds to 2 seconds.
  • Buff: increased the default Carrying capacity of Bottles from 4 to 6.
  • Change: reduced the intensity of the Tonic Gas Clouds to reduce motion sickness in Players.

Trivia

  • The Clown was the first Killer featuring a range of facial expressions, though to a far lesser degree than The Spirit who received a unique facial rig with a much wider range of expressions.
  • The Clown came without a home realm, setting up his circus at the Chapel on the grounds of Crotus Prenn Asylum instead.
  • During pre-development, they designed two possible Killers. One was a World War 1 soldier who could throw gas grenades, and the other was a clown who threw balloons which the Killer could teleport to, as well as revealing nearby Survivor Auras. Both designs were considered interesting, and this was combined into a clown who threw gas grenades.
  • The Afterpiece Tonic is referred to as "Gas Bomb" in the Game files.
  • Some WIP names were "The Ringmaster" or "The Medicine Man".
  • The Clown was initially teased through postcards given to attendees of PAX East 2018.
  • The Clown was the second Killer to have two Memento Mori animations.
    • Killing a female Survivor will have The Clown cut off their right index finger.
    • Killing a male Survivor will have The Clown cut off their left pinkie finger.
      • Originally, The Clown only had his current animation for killing a female Survivor.
This was changed due to the release of Ash Williams, who had a prosthetic right hand.

Maurice

  • Maurice is The Clown's horse that pulled his caravan and accompanied him into The Entity's Realm.
  • Maurice can be seen on the Map Father Campbell's Chapel, where he is lying on a bed of straw in the carnival section of the Map.
  • Maurice cannot be interacted with, but occasionally neighs while looking around.
  • Maurice is disfigured from the transition into The Entity's Realm, having been severely burnt on one side of his body and becoming blind.
The Entity granted him a demonic-looking third eye to compensate for his blindness.
  • Maurice disappeared from Father Campbell's Chapel with the introduction of CHAPTER 24: Roots of Dread.
The most likely explanation for this is that The Dredge did something to Maurice, as occasionally while idling in the Lobby as The Dredge, a horse head will drop from its body, before being dragged back into it.
The horse head in question is clearly Maurice, as it is the very same model, except for the third eye's socket being empty.
Another indication of a connection to The Dredge is the fact that the Developers had posted a tweet about Maurice missing (see Gallery).
    • In a later update, The Dredge received a new cosmetic, the "Memory of Maurice". The outfit is themed around Maurice, and horses in general. It features Maurice's head, along with several other horse skulls and limbs. When landing a successful hit or picking up a survivor with the outfit equipped, it will play Maurice's horse sounds when you go near him at the carnival.
  • Maurice is a mystical telepathic horse, capable of communicating with people.
    • The "Maurice the Great Mystic" depicts a carnival advertisment for Maurice before they entered the Entity's Realm, as a mystic horse.
    • A third eye is a popular expression for possessing mystical mental powers.
    • In the Tomes he speaks to Saku Nakano.
      • In The House of Arkham (IV), he begged to be saved from the tentacled monster which held him captive.
      • In The House of Arkham (V), he discussed the situation they were in with Saku, stating that "I don’t like this place, let’s get out of here."

Voice Actor

  • The Clown is voiced by Sébastien Duval, who at that time worked as the Tech Lead Programmer on the Game.
