Herman Carter

Quotes left.png I have difficulty keeping my sanity. Each day, this altering world provides me with new trials. A man wearing the robes of a doctor crossed my path. From afar, I witness him walking around, searching.. But he was not...normal. Eyes and mouth pried open, in a painful and disturbing way. Where do these fiends stem from? I do not trust him, he looks like he wants to bring pain, not healing? I will stay away, it is the wisest thing to do.

Original Lore

This is the original Lore for Herman Carter as it was presented on Dead by Daylight's now archived Website.

From an early age, Herman Carter understood the human psyche. To analyse and de-construct something as powerful as the brain intrigued him. He was an apt pupil and gained the attention of his teachers. He excelled in high-school and was published in "Partisan" — a psychology gazette. Within a year, Carter was fast-tracked into Yale's advanced neuroscience programme, really a front for the CIA. Brainpower is a must if you're about to conquer the world and demolish foes across the pond. The CIA understood this, so interrogation and intelligence became their number one priority. All they needed were brilliant people — like Carter.

Carter and other top-tier recruits were transferred off-campus and into a secret black site facility in Illinois known as Léry's Memorial Institute. A protégé craves a mentor, and that's where Dr Otto Stamper stepped in, who taught Carter that information is everything and knowledge is power. He was given all instruments needed, a guiding hand, and more or less everything he asked for. He never realised that sunlight had started to become so scarce, that he too was kept in the dark. Because knowledge doesn't only give you power, it also transforms you into a threat.

To extract information was his mission. Dr Stamper encouraged Carter to go further and not to consider this a normal medical facility — no eyes were watching them, there were no rules to abide. The agency just pointed Carter in the right direction, then he started to take a few steps back as he saw how Carter could walk on his own. Docile test subjects were exchanged for real, live spies. People that played a role in the troubles outside the facility. Carter shouldered this new role — Project Awakening took form, and on paper Carter described it as "experimental interrogation". It was approved and over a few months, nobody knocked on his door. Screams and moans filled the corridor outside his lab, but wars skew people and what they accept — as long as the enemy is kept at bay. The fluorescent lights flickered more and more often. Electro-convulsive Treatment became a standard dish on the menu. Prisoners held at the facility begged the guards to take them to any other lab but Carter's. Rumours were disregarded in the beginning.

Over the years, Carter became known as The Doctor and no one ever questioned if he had even held a medical certificate or even what happened to the prisoners after they had given up their information. It was only after the Léry's Memorial Institute went silent for a week that they finally uncovered the true horror of what had happened there.

Carter's experimental information extraction had turned to horrific and bizarre torture. Patients and prisoners were found dead or in vegetative states with all types of head trauma. In his office, they found the most terrible discovery of all. Dr Stamper himself, his head peeled open and an array of electrodes and sensors inserted into his still working, but annihilated brain. There was no sign of Herman "The Doctor" Carter, but his research papers suggested that he had been using the prisoners as part of awful ECT experiments as he searched for the panacea of mind control.

The government didn't want to know. The black site was condemned and all knowledge of the Léry's Memorial Institute redacted forever.

Current Lore

This is the Lore as it is present in Dead by Daylight itself.

Showing exceptional aptitude in psychology, Herman was handpicked for special training in an advanced neuroscience program located in a secret black site facility in Illinois known as Léry's Memorial Institute, really a front for the CIA.

This is where Herman met Dr Otto Stamper, where under his guidance, Herman began to use strange and ever increasingly vicious methods to extract information from prisoners sent to the institute, which was also a covert prison and re-education cenre for whoever was the USA's current nemesis. His liberal use of violent electroshock therapy revealed dramatic results and several threats to national security were uncovered.

Over the years, Herman became known as The Doctor and no one ever questioned if he had even held a medical certificate or even what happened to the prisoners after they had given up their information. It was only after Léry's Memorial Institute went silent for a week that the true horror was finally discovered. The personnel, patients, and prisoners were all found dead with all types of head trauma. All personnel and prisoners' bodies were accounted for, including Dr Stamper, but no sign of Herman “The Doctor” Carter.

The Doctor's Perks

These are Perks which start off only appearing in The Doctor'Bloodweb IconHelp bloodweb.png. After achieving Level 30, Teachable versions of these Perks can be found:

  • Overwhelming Presence - Level 30
  • Monitor & Abuse - Level 35
  • Overcharge - Level 40

Once obtained, other Killers will be able to find The Doctor's Perks in their respective Bloodwebs from that point onwards.

OverwhelmingPresence.gif
Overwhelming Presence

Your presence alone instils great fear.

Survivors within your Terror Radius IconHelp terrorRadius.png suffer from inefficiency:

  • When using an Item IconHelp items.png, its Depletion rate is increased by 80/90/100 %.

"Shit!! I dropped the gauze!"

MonitorAndAbuse.gif
Monitor & Abuse

Meticulous in your approach, terrifying in your application.

Your base Terror Radius IconHelp terrorRadius.png is increased by 8 metres.

  • Whenever you are outside of a Chase, your Terror Radius IconHelp terrorRadius.png is reduced by 16 metres while your Field of View is increased by 3/5/10 °.

Field of View gains do not stack.

"It's time for your treatment!." — Herman Carter, The Doctor

Overcharge.gif
Overcharge

You are fuelled by your hate for progress.

Damaging a Generator IconHelpLoading generators.png overcharges it:

  • The next Survivor interacting with it will be faced with a difficult Skill Check IconHelp skillChecks.png.
  • Failing the Skill Check results in an additional Progression loss of 3/4/5 %.
  • Succeeding the Skill Check does not grant any bonus Progression.

"It is a trap. But a trap one must step in..."

  • The Doctor puts his Weapon away on his belt when he's about to perform his Memento Mori IconHelp mementoMori.png.

Power: Carter's Spark

FulliconPowers cartersSpark.png
Quotes left.png Is it a gift, or a curse?
The Entity has ignited a corrupted and inexhaustible spark in The Doctor's heart which allows him to generate electroconvulsive power at will.
His insidious treatment corrupts the minds of those it touches.
Victims shocked by the corrupt spark begin to lose their grip on reality and, with repeated exposure, inevitably succumb to madness.
Quotes right.png

CARTER'S SPARK:
Successfully striking Survivors with The Doctor's special abilities, Shock Therapy and Static Blast, increases the Survivors' Madness, eventually afflicting them with the Madness IconStatusEffects madness.png Status Effect and triggering increasingly potent effects:

Madness I:

  • Causes Survivors to scream once, revealing their location to The Doctor.
  • Slight chance to trigger Madness Skill Checks (33 %).

Madness II:

  • Causes Survivors to scream once, revealing their location to The Doctor.
  • Causes Survivors to experience hallucinations in the form of an Illusionary Doctor.
  • Moderate chance to trigger Madness Skill Checks (66 %).

Madness III:

  • Causes Survivors to scream intermittently, revealing their location to The Doctor.
  • Causes Survivors to experience hallucinations in the form of an Illusionary Doctor.
  • Disables Survivors' ability to perform any Repairing, Healing, Sabotaging, Searching, or Cleansing interactions until they successfully Snap Out of It.
  • Tremendous chance to trigger Madness Skill Checks (100 %) during Snap Out of It.
  • Succeeding Snap Out of It will return Survivors back to Madness I.

SPECIAL ABILITY: Shock Therapy Atl Hud AB IconShockTherapy.png
Press and hold the Power button to perform a Shock Therapy Attack, unleashing a ranged shock attack on the ground in front of The Doctor.
Survivors struck by Shock Therapy gain increased Madness and any interactions they are performing are immediately cancelled and put on a cool-down of 2.5 seconds.

Shock Therapy immediately negates the Oblivious IconStatusEffects oblivious.png Status Effect.

SPECIAL ABILITY: Static Blast
Press and hold the Active Ability button to perform a Static Blast, causing all Survivors within The Doctor's Terror Radius to scream.
Survivors struck by Static Blast gain one Madness Tier and any interactions they are performing are immediately cancelled.

Static Blast can only be activated when not on cool-down (60 seconds).

Static Blast immediately negates the Oblivious Status Effect.

Power Trivia

Additional information can be found in the Madness IconStatusEffects madness.png Article.
  • The Shock Therapy attack has a default range of 10 metres.
  • The Shock Therapy attack has a default charge time of 1 second.
  • The Static Blast attack range is directly tied to The Doctor's Terror Radius IconHelp terrorRadius.png and can be increased and decreased accordingly.
  • The Static Blast attack has a default charge time of 2 seconds.
  • The Doctor is slowed to 3.08 m/s while charging the Shock Therapy attack.
  • The Shock Therapy attack has a so-called Detonation Delay of 1 second in between spawning the visual effects of the shock wave propagating outwards from The Doctor and it shocking any Survivors within its Area of Effect.
  • After a successful Shock Therapy attack, there is a Power and Attack cool-down of 1.5 seconds.
  • NOTE: despite the in-game Tooltips stating otherwise, the interaction penalty of 2.5 seconds Survivors experience only applies to Shock Therapy, not Static Blast.

DLC

The Doctor is currently part of 1 DLC:

History

Original Power

CARTER'S SPARK:
Successfully striking Survivors with The Doctor's special abilities, Shock Therapy and Static Field, increases the Survivors' Madness, eventually afflicting them with the Madness Status Effect and triggering increasingly potent effects:

Madness I:

  • Causes Survivors to scream once, revealing their location to The Doctor.

Madness II:

  • Causes Survivors to scream once, revealing their location to The Doctor.
  • Causes Survivors to experience hallucinations in the form of an Illusionary Doctor.

  • Succeeding Snap Out of It will return Survivors back to Madness II.

SWITCHING STANCE:
Punishment Mode is used to injured Survivors.
Treatment Mode grants the special abilities Static Field and Shock Therapy:

SPECIAL ABILITY: Static Field
While in Treatment Mode, The Doctor generates a Static Field within his Terror Radius, which passively increases Survivors' Madness based on their proximity to The Doctor.

The Doctor's Movement speed is slightly decreased while in Treatment Mode (4.3 m/s).

SPECIAL ABILITY: Shock Therapy
While in Treatment Mode, press and hold the Attack button to charge and release a Shock Therapy Area-of-Effect attack that greatly increases Survivors' Madness.

Pre-Rework Power

CARTER'S SPARK:
Successfully striking Survivors with The Doctor's special abilities, Shock Therapy and Static Blast, increases the Survivors' Madness, eventually afflicting them with the Madness Status Effect and triggering increasingly potent effects:

The Doctor's Movement speed is slightly decreased while in Treatment Mode (4.4 m/s).

SPECIAL ABILITY: Shock Therapy
While in Treatment Mode, press and hold the Attack button to charge and release a Shock Therapy Area-of-Effect attack that greatly increases Survivors' Madness.
Any interactions struck Survivors are performing are immediately cancelled and put on a cool-down of 2.5 seconds.

Shock Therapy immediately negates the Oblivious IconStatusEffects oblivious.png Status Effect.

Static Field Statistics

  • Madness Tier thresholds were at 5, 55, and 105 points respectively.
  • Madness was passively gained whenever Survivors were within The Doctor's Terror Radius and he was in Treatment mode, indicated by spark VFX at the Survivors' feet.
    • The closer they were to a Treatment mode Doctor, the faster the passive Madness-gain.
  • Madness passively decayed at a rate of -0.5 points per second when outside of The Doctor's Terror Radius.

Change Log

Hotfix 1.5.1a

  • Nerf: removed the (unintentional) ability to automatically shock injured Survivors anywhere within The Doctor's Terror Radius when performing a Shock Therapy attack.

Hotfix 1.5.1b

  • Buff: increased Treatment Mode Movement speed from 4.3 m/s to 4.4 m/s.
  • Buff: increased Shock Therapy Attack range by 20 % to 9 metres.
  • Buff: adjusted the Shock Therapy Area of Effect to also hit Survivors who, in terms of elevation, are slightly above or below The Doctor.
  • Buff: increased Snap Out of It duration by 4 seconds to 12 seconds.
  • Quality of Life: added the ability to read the Aura of Illusionary Doctors when the afflicted Survivor has Tier III Madness to The Doctor's base-kit.
  • Changed Hallucination Aura colour from "Notice Me!" Hot Pink to "I Indicate An Ally" Yellow.

Patch 1.6.2

For additional information about this special update, see Doctor Cube.
  • Quality of Life: Snap Out of It is now considered a Healing action and can be revealed by A Nurse's Calling IconPerks aNursesCalling.png.
  • Buff: Snap Out of It now has a chance to trigger Skill Checks.
    • Failing those Skill Checks will interrupt the action and cause the Survivor to scream, revealing their location.
  • Buff: added Madness Skill Checks to The Doctor's base-kit (were formerly exclusive to the "Order" IconAddon orderCartersNotes.png Add-ons).
  • Buff: removed the Movement Speed penalty when switching Stances; The Doctor now already moves at Treatment mode speed.
  • Buff: added an interaction cool-down of 2.5 seconds to Survivors hit by the Shock Therapy attack.
  • Buff: added the ability for Tier III Madness to prevent Survivors from using Med-Kits and Toolboxes, as well as healing themselves, other Survivors, or repairing Generators.

Patch 1.9.2

  • Buff: extended the ability for Tier III Madness to prevent Survivor interactions to include Sabotage actions as well as the use of any Item.

Patch 2.0.0

  • Quality of Life: changed Illusionary Doctors to always wear the same Outfit as The Doctor himself, instead of his default one.

Patch 2.4.0

Patch 3.5.0

  • Rework: extensive Doctor Rework.
    • Buff: increased Shock Therapy Attack range to 10 metres.
    • Buff: removed the need to switch Stances in order to use Shock Therapy.
    • Buff: replaced Static Field with Static Blast.
    • Quality of Life: Illusionary Doctors now use The Doctor's idle stance instead of his menu stance.

Patch 3.6.0

  • Buff: removed the ability for Madness to decay passively over time.
  • Buff: added Reverse Skill Checks to his base-kit.
  • Quality of Life: standardised the Madness Tiers, with Shock Therapy filling 50 % and Static Blast 100 % of a Tier.

Patch 4.7.0

  • Quality of Life: Madness' Tiers now each possess a distinct visual on the HUD.
  • Quality of Life: improved The Doctor's visual effects to improve performance.
    • Reduced the intensity of the "Glitch" and "Madness" screen effects.
    • Updated and increased level-of-detail of his character model and various cosmetics.

Trivia

  • The Doctor introduced Madness IconStatusEffects madness.png, a new Game Mechanic/Status Effect unique to him.
  • The Doctor was the first Killer to have had two different stances, Punishment Mode for regular attacks and Treatment Mode to use his Power.
    • Treatment Mode allowed The Doctor to perform grabs, but prohibited any attacks with his primary weapon.
      • Since so-called Treatment grabs were virtually guaranteed to succeed, it made it extremely dangerous to go for an unhook against a Treatment mode Doctor in attack range.
  • The Doctor's Memento Mori animation was the first one in which Survivors saw part of the animation from the Killer's perspective.
  • Due to technical limitations, Illusionary Doctors originally used to wear the default customisation option of The Doctor, making them easily distinguishable from Doctors wearing either the Prestige or Project Awakening outfits.
    • This was changed with Patch 2.0.0: Illusionary Doctors now wear the same customisation options as The Doctor.
  • After receiving a rework with Patch 3.5.0, The Doctor received his own Main Menu Theme and unique Chase Music.

Lore Trivia

  • The Doctor's' facial equipment is a reference to the 1971 Movie A Clockwork Orange where the protagonist undergoes brutal psychotherapy treatment in an attempt to cure his mania and bloodlust.
  • The Doctor's' background story may be a reference to MKULTRA, a CIA research project that officially ran from 1951 to 1973 and experimented with unethical methods of interrogation and mind control.
  • "Herman" was a widely popular name in the US in the 19th century and remained so throughout the first half of the 20th.
  • "Carter" is a surname common among African Americans capable of tracing their roots back to the southern United States or Caribbean from the early 20th century onward.
  • Some file names reveal that during development, The Doctor was originally called "Mu Yi", a name that sees The Doctor's likely original nationality as either Chinese or Korean.
    • The terms "Mu" (無 in Japanese; 무 in Korean) or "Wú" (无 in Chinese) mean "not have; without" and are a key word in Buddhism, especially in Zen traditions.
    • The term "Yi" (義 in Confucianism) means "justice, righteousness, meaning", a moral disposition to do good.
    • When combined, Carter's original name literally translates to either "without justice" or "without meaning".
  • Other file and WIP names of his Add-ons ("Jade Charm", "Nanmu Catapult", "Tiger Fang Charm") also reveal that The Doctor was generally supposed to be more Chinese-themed at an early point in development.
    • This was later changed to his current name and ancestral descent.

Cosmetic Trivia

DO outfit 012.png
The Doctor as "The Look-See"
  • The Doctor's Legendary Outfit, "The Look-See", is a character from the Crypt TV series of the same name.
    • "The Look-See" is an evil entity who haunts those unable to let go of their grief.
After leaving a cryptic note as a warning of its imminent appearance, "The Look-See" murders its victim and takes a body part symbolic of the reason for the victim's grief.
