Overview
In Eastern Alpine regions located in central Europe, folklore warns of Krampus, an anthropomorphic horned figure resembling a goat, who accompanies Saint Nicolas on the night of the 5th of December.
Both figures visit children, but whereas Saint Nicolas rewards well-behaved children with treats, Krampus punishes the misbehaved children by flogging them with birch rods. In some folk tales, The Krampus would trap and kidnap naughty children, holding them in the basket or sack upon his back.
