Like Cheryl Mason, James Sunderland originates from the video game franchise Silent Hill, specifically Silent Hill 2 (2001), in which he is the protagonist.
Overview[]
James Sunderland is an office clerk, married to Mary Shepherd-Sunderland. His wife tragically died to an illness three years prior to the events of Silent Hill 2.
During the events of Silent Hill 2, James Sunderland receives a letter from his late wife, telling him to meet her in their "special place" in Silent Hill. Upon arrival, he uncovers many clues about the truth of his disturbing past. He also meets Maria, a mysterious woman who has the uncanny resemblance of his wife. Eventually, he finds himself sinking deeper and deeper into the unknown, and toward a despair from which he may never return.
Trivia[]
- James is the first Legendary Outfit to not be the same gender as their base character.
- Storyboards for the CHAPTER 16: Silent Hill trailer appear to show James in the place of Cheryl Mason, which could potentially imply that he was originally intended to be the Survivor for the chapter.
- This is also reinforced by James having a separate character portrait in the files, making him the only Legendary Character to have their own full portrait before it was removed in Patch 7.1.0.
- James was the fourth Legendary Character to come with a unique character voice.
- James provided the flavour text on the Obsidian Goblet Add-on.
- One of James' lobby animations is a direct reference to the intro of Silent Hill 2, where he sighs during the intro cutscene.
- If James is sitting at the Campfire, he does so in a hunched-over pose, which is another reference to Silent Hill 2, in which he sits in the same manner in front of a television set.
- James was initially stated to be released in July of 2021, however this was changed for unknown reasons.
- Pyramid Head is a figure of James' guilt and inner torment, manifesting from the part of his mind that desires punishment.
- As of Patch 7.1.0, purchasing James from the in-game Store also includes the "Dog Rules" Charm, and was granted retroactively to Players who had already owned James.
- The Charm is a reference to the Dog Ending in Silent Hill 2, one of a series of non-canonical "joke endings", a staple in Silent Hill.
Character Meme[]
- "Jeryl" was a glitched Character, an amalgamation of James' head on Cheryl's torso and legs.
This was done by Players abusing glitches to break James' Cosmetic Set, allowing him to access Cheryl's otherwise inaccessible Cosmetic pieces.- This was eventually patched out in Patch 6.1.0, when these glitches were fixed.
